Collection: Frequently Asked Questions

OUR BRAND

Where is Dae based?

Dae was born in the Arizona desert, but today we have remote team members all over the U.S.

Where are Dae products made?

Our haircare products are formulated and produced in the United States with globally-sourced ingredients.

What makes Dae formulas different from other hair care brands?

We make it part of our mission to formulate products that are clean, vegan and always delivering the best results while being indulgent to use. What do we mean by “clean”?  We mean that our products are not formulated with SLS, SLES, parabens, phthalates or synthetic dyes (with the exception of our Purple Shampoo color correction product in which we’ve used safe & gentle (when used as directed) synthetic dyes for optimum efficacy.  All of our products are vegan and cruelty free.

All Dae products contain nourishing desert-derived botanicals and other good-for-you ingredients packed with vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants to hydrate, strengthen & restore your hair to its healthiest luster.

We believe hair care should be uncomplicated, effective and make your shower experience dreamy.

What does Dae mean?

Our name is inspired by the sun’s daily rhythm: Dawn, Afternoon and Evening.

These are three periods of the dae when the sun rises, shines bright (especially in the desert) and sets. These moments happen daely and are always so beautiful to witness when we take the time to appreciate them. This holds true for the little daely moments that we sometimes take for granted.

Dae wants to be there for you during those moments; when you’re singing in the shower, running late for work or coming back from the gym. All the everydae moments that make you who you are.  We hope you take in those moments and relish in them, and we hope Dae makes them a little extra special.

How do you pronounce Dae?

Dae is pronounced “day”.

PRODUCT INFO

Which Dae products are safe for color-treated hair?

Every Dae product is formulated to be safe for color-treated hair when used as directed.

We eliminate harsh, stripping ingredients and infuse our formulas with nourishing botanicals that help to protect the longevity of color and prevent fading.

How do I know which Dae products are best for my hair type & texture?

Dae products are intentionally formulated to be very universal — addressing the concerns of virtually all hair types and textures. That said, we understand that your hair has unique needs, so “listen” to your hair, as the needs may even change seasonally – you may need more moisture in the dry winter months or need some clarifying during those hot summer daes…

Our Signature Collection is ideal for all hair types (especially normal to oily) and delivers bouncy, shiny & healthy hair.

Our Monsoon Moisture Collection is ideal for dry, dull and moisture-resistant hair delivering intense yet weightless moisture, and leaving hair frizz-free and smooth, glossy & touchably soft.

What products are ideal for oily or fine hair?

Our Signature collection is ideal for oily or fine hair. Signature Shampoo creates a rich lather that effectively yet gently lifts dirt, oils and buildup from the hair and scalp while Signature Conditioner detangles, hydrates and smooths – leaving strands hydrated, bouncy and shiny.

What products are ideal for dry, dull or moisture resistant hair?

Our Monsoon Moisture mask deeply hydrates & nourishes, smoothes frizz and strengthen strands — for hair that’s more manageable, glossy and touchably-soft. We'd also recommend our Mirage Mist Leave-In Conditioner to mist-ify dull, dry, and frizzy strands with nutrient-rich botanicals that detangle and condition your locks!

What products are ideal for coarse, curly hair?

Our Monsoon Moisture collection is great for hair that is coarse, curly & coily with richly moisturizing desert botanicals.

Is the Monsoon Moisture Mask OK to use on fine, thin or oily hair?

Yes! Our award-winning Monsoon Moisture Mask is ideal for all hair types, whenever it’s in need of an extra boost of rich moisture. For those with oily hair or scalp, we recommend applying the mask starting from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding your scalp.

Are your products nut-free?

Not all, no. Some of our products do contain nut oils, such as argan, shea, coconut and almond oils. Some products do not contain any nut oils, however, we cannot guarantee that our products were made in a nut-free facility. As always, we encourage all customers, especially those with known allergies, to conduct a patch test before using any Dae product. Customers with known nut allergies should consult with a healthcare professional before using any self-care product. If any unexpected or adverse reactions are experienced after application of a product, immediately contact a healthcare professional.

Are Dae products gluten-free?

No, Dae products are not certified gluten-free. While Dae products aren’t intentionally formulated with wheat proteins, we don’t actively test for the absence of them and our products are manufactured in facilities that make products with wheat protein. If you have concerns about an allergy, we suggest consulting with a healthcare professional before using any Dae product.

Are Dae products vegan?

All Dae products are vegan and cruelty-free. We’re also proud to be Leaping Bunny certified.

Does Dae test on animals?

Dae never tests on animals. All Dae products are Leaping Bunny certified & cruelty-free.

Why don’t you formulate with parabens, SLS, SLES, phthalates, or synthetic dyes?

Some sulfates, such as SLS and SLES, are harsh surfactants that dissolve dirt and oil. But they can also strip the hair and scalp of healthy, natural oils — leading to dryness and irritation.

Instead, we use gentle, plant-derived surfactants to keep the hair and scalp’s natural balance intact.

Phthalates are chemicals that are commonly used to stabilize fragrances and have been linked to reproductive and developmental issues.

We work with our fragrance houses and packaging manufacturers to ensure phthalates are not used in our formulas or packaging production.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives meant to inhibit bacteria growth and extend the shelf life of products; however, studies indicate a possible link between parabens and problems with long-term reproductive and overall health.  Skin irritation has been reported in some people exposed to parabens.

Instead, we use milder preservatives in our products, such as phenoxyethanol, which is included on Sephora’s list of approved clean ingredients for use in cosmetics.

Artificial dyes and color stabilizers are used to cosmetically tint or stabilize the color of products. Unfortunately, these ingredients can be very irritating to the skin and scalp, which is why we do not formulate with them — and why we recommend keeping your products out of direct sunlight. (However, please note that a little fading of the product is unlikely to inhibit its efficacy!)

One exception we've made is in our Purple Shampoo color-correcting product for which we chose safe synthetic dyes in order to promote efficacy.

Are your products organic?

Dae products are formulated with both natural and safe synthetic ingredients to provide the best performance and results. Though Dae products are not certified organic, you can feel good knowing every product is formulated to be clean and gentle.

What is the shelf life of Dae products?

Each product has a shelf life of 24 months.

What is the date listed on my product?

Some, but not all, of our Dae products have the manufacturing date listed on the bottom to let you know when the product was made.

Why did my product not deliver in a carton?

Not to worry! Some products ship without a carton in an effort to be more environmentally-friendly!

Violet Hour Purple Shampoo

What is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo?

A tone-correcting, hydrating shampoo that counteracts brassiness, enhances color, and repairs damage – for blonde, gray, and lightened brunette hair. It is not a hair dye, so it won't lift or brighten hair color and it can't make you blonde if you aren't blonde. It will deposit a violet pigment that helps to counteract brassy tones.

How does Violet Hour Purple Shampoo work?

It uses violet pigments to color correct warm tones in blonde hair. It cools down the tone of yellow shades, revealing a more platinum color.

Will Violet Hour Purple Shampoo help with brassiness?

Yes! We formulated it to help counteract brassiness and enhance your color.

Will Violet Hour Purple Shampoo make my hair purple?

Violet Hour Purple Shampoo contains pigment that can tint hair purple if not used in accordance with instructions. A small number of individuals who used Violet Hour Purple Shampoo more than 1-2 times per week for longer than 5 minutes reported slight purple tinting of hair. Upon use, before shampooing your full head of hair, take a small section of hair, apply the product, leave on for 5 minutes, rinse, and then assess for any tinting.  If tinting is observed, either discontinue use or limit usage to one time per week for no longer than 5 minutes. Washing with a clarifying shampoo helps mitigate and/or reduce tinting.

Is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo only for blonde hair?

Violet Hour can be used on all hair colors, however, it is formulated to improve the appearance of blonde hair shades, such as  platinum, ashy blonde, brassy, very light blonde-brown, silver, gray, white, or pastel (bleached) hair.

Violet Hour is not formulated to change the color of natural brunette hair, but it can combat brassiness from blonde highlights.

Is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo a toner?

Yes, it’s a cleansing toner to keep your blonde hair vibrant and fresh looking. Purple pigments help to draw out the brassiness and neutralize the unwanted tones, keeping your color brass-free.

Can Violet Hour Purple Shampoo lighten hair?

Violent Hour does not lighten hair. However, it can provide and create an illusion of brightness to give dull, brassy hair a lighter look when used in accordance with instructions.

How often should you use purple shampoo?

It depends on how often you want to use it for your hair type and color. The recommendation is once to twice a week maximum. Using more than 1-2 times per week can result in purple tinting of the hair.

Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner or mask.

When can I expect results from using Violet Hour Purple Shampoo?

As early as one use! But stay patient if you don’t see results right away—it can take a couple applications to work its magic depending on the shade, texture and thickness of your hair.

What makes Violet Hour Purple Shampoo purple?

Rich yet gentle violet pigments that help counteract brassiness and enhance the depth and dimension of color.

Is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo clean?

Yes! It’s formulated without stripping sulfates, like SLS/SLES, and with moisturizing extracts, like Cactus flower, Hibiscus and Aloe Vera.

Should I use anything after Violet Hour Purple Shampoo?

Use your favorite Dae conditioner or mask.

Will Violet Hour Purple Shampoo dry out my hair?

We formulate our purple shampoo with gentle surfactants, botanicals and natural oils, so that it’s gentle and moisturizing. We also formulated it without SLS/SLES, so it shouldn’t dry out your hair.

Does Violet Hour Purple Shampoo clean the hair?

Yes! It focuses on cleansing and toning the hair.

How should I use the Violet Hour Purple Shampoo?

Massage through wet hair, adding more water as needed to lather. Leave in for 2-4 minutes. Rinse well. Use 1-2x per week depending on level of tone correction needed. Follow with your favorite Dae conditioner. (For your first use, we recommend doing a patch test on a small piece of hair to see how long it needs to sit.)

Should I wash my hair with warm water or cold water when using the Violet Hour Purple Shampoo?

Washing with cold water can help lock in the color you want.

Why did you update your sulfate-free claim?

We updated our claims to read “no SLS/SLES,” because we wanted to specify the exact types of sulfate we can assure are not in any of our formulas.

Does Violet Hour Purple Shampoo contain synthetic colors or is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo naturally colored?

Violet Hour uses a combination of synthetic and mineral colors to achieve its rich purple hue.

We make formulation decisions on a case by case basis in order to give you products that are as clean and sustainable as possible, without sacrificing quality or efficacy.

Is Violet Hour Purple Shampoo safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding?

The ingredients used in the Violet Hour Purple Shampoo are generally considered safe to use but as always, please consult your health care professional with questions or concerns to determine if Dae Hair products are safe for you.
